12 Months of OpenStreetMap

August is Back-to-School Month

Sharpen those pencils and don't forget your lunchbox - it's Back-to-School Month. This month, OpenStreetMap US is focusing on mapping schools, Historically Black Colleges & Universities, and Safe Routes to School features for #12MonthsofOSM.

Project of the month: Mapping Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs)

Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) had been largely unmapped in OSM before Harrison Cole put a call out to the community to fix this. Help finish mapping these campuses - learn more here!

OSM US Mappy Hour

OSM US hosts regular Mappy Hours featuring a variety of topics and guest speakers. For August's 12 Months of OSM theme of Back-to-School, Thomas Baumann shared his use of OpenStreetMap for Safe Routes to School, and Harrison Cole discussed the HBCU mapping project. You can catch this presentation as well as previous Mappy Hours here.

Mark your calendars and register for our next Mappy Hour on September 8, 2021, 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM EDT. The topic is Food Access with presenter Alex Hill, Detroit Food Map.

Community Spotlight: US Bicycle Route System Update
Shout-out to the OSM US volunteers that are committed to keeping the US Bicycle Route System up-to-date in OpenStreetMap! From SteveA on talk-us: "Lots of us took opportunities to enter data, learn new skills, contribute wiki, draw graphics, double-check, make improvements to our process and even widen our circle to include more volunteer Contributors making both a great project and a great map."
