OpenStreetMap US Microgrants empower OSM US members by funding the events, travel, and educational initiatives that strengthen the OpenStreetMap community across the United States.

Grant Classifications

EVENT: To fund meetups, mapathons, and other events hosted by local OpenStreetMap organizations and/or clubs. Up to $200 reimbursement of expenses for a single event, or $500 reimbursement for recurring events within a twelve month period. Learn more about the Event Grant ➔

TRAVEL: To support community members promoting and educating others about OpenStreetMap at conferences, symposiums, or other networking events. Up to $500 reimbursement for travel expenses. Learn more about the Travel Grant ➔

EDUCATION: To introduce new generations to open mapping, in collaboration with TeachOSM. Up to $500 reimbursement of expenses for a single event, classroom activity, project, or supplies that incorporate or facilitate the use of OpenStreetMap. Learn more about the Education Grant ➔

Application Timeline

The microgrant application is always open, and entries are reviewed on a rolling basis. Please note that it may take up to 3 months to hear about the status of your application, so plan ahead when requesting funding for future travel or events.

Requirements

Each grant category has specific requirements, so be sure to review their dedicated webpages before applying. There are a few requirements that apply to all OpenStreetMap US Microgrants:

  1. Someone must be an active member of OpenStreetMap US (at any tier) both at the time of application, and the time of your grant-funded activities.
    1. If applying for a Travel Grant, you must meet the requirement as an OSM US invididual member.
    2. If applying for the Event Grant on behalf of a community group, one member of the group must meet the requirement as an OSM US individual member.
    3. If applying for the Education Grant, you can meet the requirement as an OSM US individual member OR one of the participating institutions or organizations can meet the requirement as an organizational member.
  2. Your grant-funded activities must occur within the United States. Virtual events can be open to international participants, but must be US-focused.
  3. You may submit an application for more than one grant category in a calendar year, but they must not be intended to fund the same event or travel.
