Happy 9th Birthday OpenStreetMap!
It’s always fun to dig into Archive.org’s Way Back Machine on such occasions and here is what I found: the mission statement of OpenStreetMap in the year of its inception:
This is an effort to produce free (CC licensed) streetmaps of the world. The idea is to run around with a gps and annotate the data using the applet below in a wiki-type way.
Nice and simple. We’ve come a long way, here’s to many more years OpenStreetMap!
