OpenStreetMap US

TomTom launched MapMetrics, a system to analyze map quality for OSM globally, in August 2021 (https://www.tomtom.com/blog/maps/tomtom-openstreetmaps-mapmetrics-map-editing/).

The system uses GPS traces to see where people go, and route against those traces to see if routing engines follow what people actually do. Where they agree, we show green areas. Where they disagree, we show red areas.

Many things can make a routing engine disagree with what someone drives. Perhaps roads are missing, attributed incorrectly, misaligned, one way streets are wrong and so on. MapMetrics makes no distinction but does say “here be dragons” and let mappers investigate the particular issues.

We’ve had much feedback from the community and continue to improve the metrics, and by the time of SOTM we will have a further road realignment tool available which will be discussed.

This talk will include live demos that the audience can follow along with if they wish.
