This talk presents an ongoing project in Malawi where UAV imagery is being used to support the mapping of plastics and waste piles. The project was done as part of a Master’s research study but it contributes to developing tools for understanding the impacts of plastics and waste. Using experiences from the project, the speaker seeks to challenge the audience to think outside the box and explore opportunities to leverage the capacity of the OSM community to support annotation of UAV imagery to enable upscaling of such an innovative approach for monitoring the environment.
