OpenStreetMap US

These terms apply to all OpenStreetMap US Community Projects and their Maintainers.

OpenStreetMap US will:

  1. Hold financial and legal responsibility for all operations and activities of the Community Project. The OSM US Board of Directors serves as the Community Project’s ultimate governing body.
  2. Hold the sole right to enter into agreements including contracts, debts, memorandums of understanding, and service level agreements with third parties on behalf of the Community Project.
  3. Promote the Community Project via:
    1. A page on our website.
    2. An announcement to our blog, email, and social media channels.
  4. Provide funds of up to $25 USD per month toward project materials or activities, including OSM US Tileservice usage. Funds may be distributed in the following ways:
    1. Reimbursement by OSM US to a Maintainer for expenses paid.
    2. Direct payment by OSM US to a supplier by request of Maintainers.
  5. Solicit and accept donations on behalf of the Community Project, to be used at the discretion of OSM US.
  6. Create and distribute merchandise promoting the Community Project. Any proceeds may be used at the discretion of OSM US.
  7. Assume ownership of all eligible copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property obtained or created by the Community Project. Materials ineligible for OSM US ownership include those owned by third parties and those dedicated to the public domain.
  8. Hold the right to remove any Maintainer in violation of their signed agreements via written notice.
  9. Hold the right to invite new Maintainers in the event the Community Project has no Maintainers.
  10. Hold the right to disband or restructure the Community Project, or convert it to a Charter Project, should the need arise.

As a Maintainer, you agree that:

  1. You have operational responsibility for the project, which includes leading the primary activities of the Community Project. Activities may commonly include, but are not limited to: design, development, testing, documentation, promotion, planning, and support.
  2. You are free to vacate the position at any time through written notice to OSM US, or through extended inactivity in regard to the Community Project as determined by OSM US.
  3. You are not classified as an employee of OSM US.
  4. You accept responsibility for the work of external contributors on the project. An external contributor may not be elevated to a leadership role except through becoming a Maintainer.
  5. You maintain an internal governance structure of the Community Project, provided the structure aligns with signed agreements.
  6. You may invite additional Maintainers to the Community Project, and/or delegate OSM US to invite additional Maintainers.
  7. You will not knowingly engage in any activity that jeopardizes the nonprofit or tax-exempt status of OSM US, or otherwise create injurious liability for OSM US.
  8. The OpenStreetMap US Conflict of Interest Policy applies to your participation in the Project.
  9. You will disclose all sources of existing and future funding and expenses to maintain the Project.
  10. You will fulfill the following expectations for the Community Project:
    1. It must adopt the OpenStreetMap US Code of Conduct in all of its public and private spaces and communication channels, both online and offline.
    2. It must adopt a privacy policy, if applicable.
    3. It must prominently disclose its status as a “Community Project of OpenStreetMap US” in all project materials. 
    4. It must continue to support the stated mission and purpose of OSM US.
    5. It must provide ongoing value to the OpenStreetMap community.
    6. It must maintain a free and open source license.
    7. OSM US must have administrator access to the project for stewardship purposes.
