St. Lucia updates its topographic maps t every 10 years. Since the official maps are updated so infrequently, our initiative proposed OSM as the tool for ensuring that maps are updated more frequently. Saint Lucia is prone to many natural hazards and 10-old the old maps aren’t unsuitable for humanitarian response.

In 2022, HOT launched the first OpenCities Saint Lucia initiative. Over the course of just over a year, the team trained over 100 people and more than 150,000 map changes on OSM were made.

Following OpenCities, sustaining and building upon the existing OSM community in Saint Lucia and expansion to other Caribbean islands is the desired outcome. Details related to financing, and youth engagement need to be figured out.
