We are pleased to announce OpenStreetMap US has joined 1% for the Planet as an Environmental Partner! This partnership will advance our impact through the OpenStreetMap US Trails Stewardship Initiative by creating new avenues for businesses to support our efforts around responsible recreation and environmental protection.

1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. Through business and individual memberships, 1% for the Planet inspires people to support environmental organizations through annual membership and everyday actions. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, their members have given hundreds of millions of dollars to environmental partners to date.

“The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.” - Yvon Chouinard, co-founder of 1% for the Planet.

OpenStreetMap US joins 6500+ environmental partners of 1% for the Planet supported by 5400+ business partners. As of this post, 1% for the Planet has certified $530 million+ in donations from businesses to environmental partners.

The Trails Stewardship Initiative

Launched in 2021, the OpenStreetMap US Trails Stewardship Initiative is a collaboration of government, volunteer, and private sector stakeholders working to address issues in trail mapping, navigation, outdoor recreation, and public land management. Through these efforts, navigation apps better display OpenStreetMap trail data, improve equitable access to the outdoors and trail users’ ability to engage in responsible recreation and protect our natural world.

The Trails Stewardship Fund is the foundation for the growth of the Initiative, with donations earmarked to support a sustainable solution for responsible recreation through the management of digital trail data in OpenStreetMap. OpenStreetMap US, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is advancing the democratization of geospatial data by catalyzing collaborative action around OpenStreetMap between individuals, government agencies, nonprofits, corporations, and academia. Through our grassroots initiatives and community-based programs, we create pathways for all individuals to access and improve OpenStreetMap as it increasingly becomes the source that decision-makers and corporations use to positively impact our lives.
